The color of Korea

“ The color of Korea changes little by little with the times and circumstances.”

As I prepared the exhibition graphics for Najeon & Ottchil, Korean Crafts for Millennium, I thought about the color of Korea. When it comes to Korean colors, there are colors of flags such as red, blue, white, and Obangsaek (Obangsaek means five colors such as white,black,blue,yellowandred. It represent fivecardinal directions.). The color of Korea is clear but also not very clear. It is because red, blue, and white were not always the same red, blue, white. Because the color changed as the times and circumstances changed.

The color of Korea is also related to politics. A while ago, I read a book called Design of Korea, and there was a reference to the color of Korea. During the Park Chung-hee administration, he recommended the use of ivory instead of obangsaek. Because he thought Obangsaek was tacky. This ivory color was also nicknamed Park Chung-hee's color.

Currently, Seoul presents 10 representative colors of Seoul. This is the color of our cultural heritage. Dancheong, Hangang river, Flower patterned Wall, Sky, Namsan(Mt), Ancient Palace, Korean roff tile, Stone Wall, Ginkgo berries, and Sambe. And if you look at these colors, they're different from the colors of the flag we know. These 10 colors are more soft than our original flag color or Obangsaek.

At present, we feel that the colors of the flag and the five colors are tacky. When you use the colors and Obangsaek of the flag in your design, you do not use them as they are, but adjust the brightness or saturation. In the case of the exhibition graphics that I did this time, I also used dark red and blue colors.

The color of a country changes little by little with the times and circumstances. And we need to modernize traditional values to make them more useful. But after all of this change and development, we need to solidify our color, our design.

이번 나전과 옻칠 : 천년의 빛 전시 그래픽을 준비하면서 한국의 색은 무엇인가 생각해봤습니다. 한국의 색 하면 떠오르는 것은 빨강색과 파랑색, 흰색과 같은 국기의 색과 오방색이 있습니다. 한국의 색상은 명확한듯 하면서도 그리 명확하지 않습니다. 빨강 파랑 흰색이라고 하지만 항상 같은 빨강 파랑 흰색은 아니었기 때문입니다. 시대와 상황이 변함에 따라 색상도 같이 변했기 때문입니다.

한국의 색은 정치와도 관련이 있습니다. 얼마전에 <한국의 디자인>이라는 책을 읽었는데, 한국의 색에 대한 언급이 있었습니다. 박정희 정권때는 오방색이 촌스럽다고 아이보리색을 밀기도 했습니다. 박정희 색이라는 별명도 붙었다고 합니다. 현재 서울에서는 서울 대표색 10가지를 제시합니다. 우리의 문화유산의 색상에서 착안한 색상입니다. 단청, 한강, 꽃담, 하늘, 남산, 고궁, 기와, 돌담, 은행, 삼베등의 색상이 있습니다. 이 색들을 보면 우리가 아는 국기의 색이나 오방색과는 다르게 채도나 명도가 조정되었습니다.

현재 우리의 미감으로는 국기의 색과 오방색이 촌스럽다고 느껴집니다. 보통 국기의 색과 오방색을 디자인에 사용할 경우 그대로 사용하지 않고 채도나 명도를 조절해서 사용합니다. 이번에 제가 진행한 전시 그래픽의 경우에도 어둡게 한 빨강색과 파랑색을 사용했습니다. 한 국가의 색은 시대와 상황에 따라 조금씩 바뀌며, 우리는 전통적 가치를 현대적으로 재해석해 쓰임이 많아지게 해야합니다. 하지만 이런 충분한 변화와 발전을 거쳐, 우리의 색, 우리의 디자인을 확고히 해야합니다.
