Development in Ikseon-dong
“ If people had considered the histories in Ikseon-dong, I think the change in Ikseon-dong was able to be different.”
October 9th is Hangeul Day. I heard the news about Jeong Se-Kwon who made great efforts to protect hangeul during the Japanese colonial era. He created Hanok village in Gahoe-dong and Iksun-dong which is familiar to us these days, and he is considered as the first 'developer' in Korea. He devoted a lot of his money to helping the Joseon Language Society. The hanok village, which was built to protect the territory of the Korean people from the Japanese, has protected our residential style and has become a representative landscape of Seoul. Considering the Hangul and our residential space that Jeong Se-kwon protected, I have come to see Ikseon-dong, which has been gaining huge popularity these days.
Ikseon-dong is a complex of small sized urban hanok that was built for ordinary people. There was a threat of a redevelopment, but it was maintained, and young people who's into Ikseon-dong's atmosphere began to gather and make the shops. In 2015, when I first wen to Ikseon-dong, it was an attractive place where small hanoks, narrow alleys, and interesting shops mingled. However, over the years, the featureless shops are increasingly filled, and the identity of Ikseon-dong seems to be fade out. It's really good people get interested in Hanok. In particular, hanoks in Ikseon-dong have great value in that encapsulated traditional Hanok structure and adopted modern lifestyle in that days. The value is not taken into account, and it hurts me that colorful shops are erasing the history and stories that were left in Ikseon-dong.
Rather than going to the fancy shops and cafe, If people had considered the histories in Ikseon-dong, I think the change in Ikseon-dong was able to be different.
