Previous Project Hahoe YUUT

Next Project NIHC 2017

This project started from the excellence for modern use of traditional material Yu-gi. Yu-gi bowl offers the value of ‘smaller and little less’ by various design elements. Fenomeno led the design and development of whole product.

「 smaller and little less 」

Yu-gi is the material that is not being bent or cracked and has relatively little discoloration than other material. And all these positive functions of Yu-gi has been proven by modern technology already. It kills germs and eliminates mouth disease, improves blood circulation and ultimately eliminates stroke.

The various positive functions of abandonment have also been proven by modern science. Organic spoon kills germs and eliminates mouth disease, improves blood circulation and eliminates stroke, as well as is good for anti-cancer and stroke. As these advantages are started to be known, Yu-gi, is becoming more and more valuable as a life-ware.'

We studied various forms of bowl that has 190ml standard size that designed to have rice, which is the most basic form of our dining culture.

we explored dining habit of people to find the demand and the values that modern people truly look for. then, we had a look at the trends of bowl size particularly the one to have rice that is being consumed in the market over long period of time. We, then, were able to confirm that the bowl used in the 1940s, was 680ml of volume but later reduced to half that is 370ml in the 1990s, then reduced again another half that is 190ml in 2013. After all, we have concluded that there is growing number of customers are looking for smaller size of bowls which indicates that the dining habit of people which is eating less for health is becoming a social trend. As per this findings, our design work was carried out in mind of the value of "smaller and little less".

“ Oreum & Sungsan ”

Oreum, motivated from Jeju's special topography, has unique appearance. The bowl's appearance that widens as it goes down is different from the traditional container, and if user open the lid, designed to hold less than what's seen from the outside, and the amount that takes into account the proper amount of dining.

It is made to resemble the shape of the Sungsan Oreum in Jeju. When I saw the shape of a bowl with a closed lid, I actually opened the lid and designed the inside of the bowl differently. It is the same size as the universal one, but it is supposed to hold less when the lid is opened. The shape of the container is unique, and the concise joints between the lid and the body are also prominent. Sungsan Oreum is differentiated from existing containers in a form that widens as it goes downwards and narrows back from the middle.

“ Muyoung ”

Muyoung, which was conceived from a reflection that is symmetrical above and below the water, is made by extracting elements of a simple line from the shape of a pavilion on an octagonal roof, meaning that there is no shadow. It is also made of 190ml capacity inside and has a polishing finish. An interesting feature is the difference between the exterior and the interior. The difficulty of production in knowing yu-gi is quite a form. Also, unlike other lids, the lid is integrated with the body and has a concise feature, as it begins with an upward curve that extends outward from the body, creating a very easy form to grasp.

“ Boreum & Gyum”

Boreum resembles the shape of a full moon. It will look richer than the amount of real food and show more abundance of our table. The lid is the same as or larger than the container in the form of a circle. It is a horizontally symmetrical structure with a sense of stability and the smallest set of containers.

Gyum is another project derived from the fifteenth of lunar January. You can use the lid as a bowl, so it's called the gyum. Gyum is a concept of devided Richness. Richness doubles in joy when divided, rather than when alone. A lid exists as a lid when placed on a container, but is used as a container to hold new food when removed. The lid and body can be used together in the shape of walnut to prevent awkwardness by designing and producing a flat part of the base to give the lid serviceability in the Boreum.

Various studies of material and repeated experiments have concluded that smooth glazing on the inside of the bowl is required to make the food look more precious. Outside, there are four methods applied that are smoothness, matte, glossiness, and lacquer, so that rich atmosphere is possible much more than function.

Through the branding process called Yu-gi Heritage, these products have been able to find the appropriate use that the past record only has and provide the way of proper use to modern and future value. Targeted the consumers who want to invest on themselves, on their families, and even more on the healthy value of the environment through a healthy production process, and refreshed the people of healthy tableware Yu-gi based on modern usage rather than just outlook and have improved perception of customers.
